Can't describe your wine?

Here's a word cloud I made that might help you out!

Wine Tasting Week of 2.25

Name:Takutai Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price:$14.95
Wine Critic/Review: A juicy and vibrant wine, this delivers spiced pear and apple flavors that have a mountwatering lemony note. Shades of fresh-cut grass and herb chime in on the finish. Drink now. -MW (Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA)
Personal Review: One of my favorite grape varieties. Clear, translucent, pale yellow-green to grassy yellow color on the glass. Some nice crisp acidic notes and green herbal scents. Not all too aggressive for a Sauvingon Blanc and a very nice white for the amateur drinker. Slightly course finish but that might of been because this was the first wine of the tasting.
With plain bread to clean palate.

Name:Takutai Riesling
Variety:Riesling
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price:$14.95
Wine Critic/Review: Sweet floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle combine with grapefruit and lemon characters underpinned by a mineral thread. With a splash of residual sweetness, this wine tickles your palate and makes you ask for more. The sweet entry is balanced by a bright acidity and retained spritziness, which give the wine crispness and "liveliness". It has great length and is at once mouth-filling and refreshing. (Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA)
Personal Review: Pummelo, grapefruit, maybe even a little cara cara, and other fruits from the citrus family (save lime or orange). On the side of faintly sweet to semi-sweet for a Reisling. Not all too complex for a Reisling. Subtle tastes of apricots or even pear. Would serve best cold and pair well with a light spring mix salad with darker greens (kale, mustard greens, arugala, turnip greens, etc).
With plain bread to clean palate.

Name: Takutai Pinot Noir
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Nelson region
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price:$14.95
Wine Critic/Review: Spicy cherry, raspberry, and wild rose aromas with toasty, licorice oak in support. On the palate the wine exhibits soft fruit tannins, delicate structure, and a good balance. A highly likeable, flavor packed wine for consumers new to the delights of the Pinot grape. (Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA)
Personal Review: Blackened ruby color on the swirl. Black licorice with blackberry and dark berry scents. Oak, cherry wood, and other timber tastes. Strong toasted flavors at first sip. Lighter tannins than expected for a Pinot Noir. Would go well with a lighter dinner of stew, steak, or game protein.
With plain bread to clean palate.

Name:Terra Sparkling Malbec
Variety: Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price:$13.95
Wine Critic/Review: Intense red with blue tones and a very bright, giving origin to violet bubbles. Red fruits in nose, cranberry, plums, and a touch of toasted bread and almond, which are the typical red wine aromas. It has a balanced acidity and sugar. Adorned with red fruits, a lot of greasiness and tannins that give a firm structure which characterizes the Malbec wine. (Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA)
Personal Review: Pleasant dark red- ruby color on the glass swirl. Dark, dry, deep with blueberry and dark fruit tones. Fairly refreshing for a red wine and with decent structure on the palate. No earthy tones present.
With plain bread to clean palate.

Name:Ksana Bonarda
Variety: Bonarda
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2008
Price:$12.95
Wine Critic/Review: The bouquet is floral and lightly jammy, with berry aromas and a savory note or two. To the uninitiated, this is a great introduction to Bonarda. Finishes solid.
Personal Review: Ruby color on the swirl of the glass. Semi-sweet with red berry tones, with earthy highlights. Black cherry, raspberry, and sweet plum. Unique finish but not long lasting.
With plain bread to clean palate.

Wine Tasting Week of 2.18

Name: Shotfire
Variety: Barossa Quartage
Region: Agaston
Country: Australia
Year:2010
Price:$15
Wine Critic/Review:  A delicate floral and herbal-like bouquet, and good length of minty, fruit flavours balanced with some tight tannins. (Cracka Wines)
Wine Review II: Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Quartage has an incredible inky, opaque purple colour in the glass with aromas of ripe plum and sweet oak. The palate is rich and juicy with black fruit, fine tannins and an attractive rounded mouth feel. Simply perfect with a thick-cut steak! (Dan Murphy's)
Personal Review: Has some strong but short tannins right out of the bottle- they don't linger all too often at first sip. Some nice fruit flavors and very very mellow hints of mint. Smell of sage and other green herbal spices.

Name: Black Opal
Variety: Shiraz
Region: South Eastern Australia
Country:Australia
Year:2011
Price:$5
Wine Critic/Review: "a rich, drinkable red that is ”full of berry, pepper, and spice aromas” (so says the winery’s website, and I agree) that also gives you some spice and pepper on your taste buds, along with very ripe dark fruit flavors.  Tannins are there, sort of.  I don’t really agree with the website’s claim that this is an “elegant” or a “full bodied” wine, but hey, their marketing people have to earn a living just like anybody else.  I’d say this is a medium-bodied red that doesn’t really taste like cabernet or shiraz, but rather just tastes pleasant.  It isn’t silky or complex, but it doesn’t reek of cheapness either.  If you’re on a tight budget, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised." (Wine Guider)
Personal Review: This wine has a very rich plum flavor, light-medium body, and a light velvety finish. This is pretty generous provided the fact that its only a $5 bottle of wine. Like the review said, for a $5 bottle of wine, it definitely doesn't reek of cheapness. Because this wine is so easy on the palette it stands alone as a very easy social drinking wine. No food taken but no food needed.

Name: Primo Amore
Variety: Moscato
Region: Puglia
Country: Italy
Year:Unknown
Price:
Wine Critic/Review: Straw-yellow with golden reflections and a delicate mousse.  Fruity and very inviting, with intense scents of peaches and exotic fruit.  Fresh and pleasantly sweet with a taste that reveals its varietal characteristic. Excellent as dessert wine it matches perfectly with jam tarts fruit salads and pastry. Also delicious with ice cream, or just on its own as an accompaniment to conversation among friends. (Jericho Wines)
Personal Review: This moscato is just as fruit forward as expected and had some pleasant notes of melon and citrus. This would probably pair well with salad, a flatbread, a chicken or fish dish, as well as dessert.

Name:Talamonti
Variety:Trebi
Region: Abruzzo (specifically Trebbiano d'Abruzzo)
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $10
Wine Critic/Review:  Pale straw with light green hues. Intense bouquet of ripe apples and peaches. Refreshing ripe apple and peach notes end with a gentle acidity. A rich, full, round, and persistent wine. (Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA)
Personal Review: Bold granny smith apple scent and pleasant light, pale yellow color. Great wine for summer days.Apricot, melon, and hint of lemon but without all the pucker.

Name:Serenity
Variety: 56% Pinot Grigio, 31% Sauvignon Blanc, 13% Gewurztraminer
Region: North coast of California
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $14
Wine Critic/Review:The 2011 vintage was marked by a cool wet spring, a long growing season, and a very small crop. The 2011 Serenity is a distinctive proprietary blend that displays fruit forward aromas of citrus, honeysuckle, and nectarine with expressive minerality. The flavors are rich and deep showing white peach, passion fruit, and honeydew melon with a hint of lime. The wine is well-balanced, leaving a long, clean, and well-textured finish, like summer in a glass. (Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA)
Personal Review: Lime scents, grassy and herbaceous, green pepper, lemon, and other earthy tones. Stronger acidity than expected and not as sweet as explained in the review. Very complex white but not as dry as I would have hoped with these earthier flavors.

Wine Tasting Week of 2.11

 Name: Abbondanza (Cherry Republic Winery)
 Variety: Cherry and Grape Wine
Region: Michigan
Country: USA
 Year:Unknown
Price: ~$10
Shop/wine critic/winery review: This wine was a translucent red. There was an aroma and taste of cherries. The finish was balanced with a finish of fruit, sweetness and crispness.(Wine Trail Traveler)
Personal Review: This dessert wine could probably be best paired with pie or even a cobbler type dessert. This wine had a light red color and a fairly tart taste. It had a very unique cherry taste- almost tasted like griottines (cherries in brandy- I ate this a lot with my yogurt while I was in France).
No food

 Name: Llama
 Variety: Malbec Old Vine
Region: Mendoza (Estate bottled by Belasco de Baquedano, Alto Agrelo Valley, Lujan de Cuyo)
Country: Argentina
 Year: 2009
Price: $12
Shop/wine critic/winery review: As its namesake, this wine embodies the distinctive spirit of our vineyards, spanning the foothills of the Andes. Aged six months in French oak barrels, Llama is a rich ruby-purple color, and boasts elegant flavors of black berries, ripe plum and robust spices with good balance and structure. (Company wine review)
Wine review II: The nose had huge notes of black cherry and roses. A first sip revealed a big bright malbec with flavors of blackberrys and spice fading into long and savory finish. Oak and tannins were matched with a delicate balance of fruit, floral and spice qualities throughout. The finish was long and left me wanting more. On paper, this sounds like an average tasty malbec, but it was really much more. (Malbecamos)
Personal Review: Strong scents of black berries and chili spices. Stronger tannins right out of the bottle and powerful acidity. Midway through the glass, the wine had mellowed and showed greater berry and fruit qualities.
No food.

 Name: Matthew Fox Vinyards
 Variety: White Zinfandel
Region: California
Country: USA
 Year: Unknown
Price: $5
Shop/wine critic/winery review: Its color was a dark peach and it was very clear. The bouquet was like peaches, matching the beautiful color. Even better, it tasted like it's wonderful bouquet, though we did find it a little on the sweet side. It's not a bad wine if someone is looking for a sweet wine. (ZenaHusband Wine Blog)
Personal Review: Very sweet with floral scents. Pleasant color but surely an after wine meal (or something you would drink on a hot summer day). Some stronger, ripe peach scents and puckering grape aftertaste.
No food.

 Name: Montes Alpha
 Variety: Syrah
Region: Colchagua Valley
Country: Chile
 Year: 2009
Price: $8
Shop/wine critic/winery review: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Viognier (Wine Searcher);
The 2009 Montes Alpha Syrah offers compelling evidence and varietal inspiration for experimenting with this grape in Chile's Colchagua Valley.  The nose is ripe and lively with plenty of florality, black licorice and subtle leather tones.  On the palate you can expect some serious fruit - cherry, blackberry and blueberry claim the initial spotlight with well-honed structure, a full body and tangible tannins dominating the evolution.
This would be a wine to pair with roasted lamb, grilled game, duck or pepper steak. (Stacy Slinkard from About.com Wine)
Wine Critic Review II: Blackberry and cola aromas are cool and collected. The palate has weight and texture to accompany berry, mint, herb and peppery flavors. Turns more herbal and roasted as it unwinds. Pepper and spice lead the finish. (Patrick Finger)
Personal Review: Licorice scents with strong cherry flavors. Heartier wine that should definitely be paired with bigger flavor meals. Violet scents and velvet finish.
No food.

Name:Nuschese

Personal Review: Black cherry aroma with some subtle vanilla flavoring on the nose. Fairly smooth and low-medium acidity. Dark raspberry flavors and lots of cherry taste too. This wine is fairly easy, especially for beginner wine drinkers.

Wine Tasting Week of 2.4

Had a few friends over for Wine and Cheese Night. What a great way to get school work done and hang out. Food spread included: Brie with herbs, goat cheese, Swiss cheese, mozzarella, Persian cucumbers with spicy siracha chilli yogurt, vegetarian quinoa cheese bites, table grapes, strawberries, fig preserves, pumpernickel chips, and water cracker. So swanky!

Name:Espuela Del Gaucho (Gaucho Spur)
Variety: Malbec
Region: Province/the Andes!
Country: Argentina
Year: 2011
Price: $13
Wine Critic/Review: Light berry aromas mix with brine, cumin and sweet spice on the nose. In the mouth, it’s rather lean and juicy, with sharp acidity creating fresh red berry flavors and tang. Turns more piercing and citrusy the longer it airs out.(Wine Enthusiast)
Personal Review: I think the review is totally on point with airing this wine out. The more the wine swirled in my glass, the more mellow and citrusy the wine was. I didn't think it had too sweet of a nose. Smooth taste and easy to drink. I would definitely buy it again. It was a fairly decent Malbec for the price and I think because I preferred the deep rustic red color that made it taste better.

Ate with: goat cheese and water crackers

Name: Pensador (the Thinker)
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: Campo de Borja
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $13
Wine Critic/Review: Snappy cherry and berry aromas have the slightest accent of mint and grass. It feels fresh, forward and tight, with plum and spicy berry flavors. The finish remains fruity and firm. (Wine Enthusiast)
Personal Review: Spicy berry flavors. It tasted much better after the second glass about 2 hours later and mixing it with other foods. It was definitely fruity as I could taste and smell some cherry and even blueberry flavors.
Ate with: herb brie and water crackers

Name: Bodega Norton
Variety: Sangiovese
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $7
Wine Critic/Review: Lively red color with hints of violets, this Sangiovese wine is very fresh on the nose with aromas of red berries, strawberries and raspberries. Norton Sangiovese 2008 is a soft and round wine that is easy to drink. (TGIC Importers)
Personal Review: Yum yum this wine was so easy to drink and did not have the bold tannins I was expecting. It had very manageable acidity and paired well with the light spread of herbed cheeses and other snacks. I could smell the strawberry accents and the bright color made it even more pleasing.
Ate with: herbed brie

Name: Simply Naked
Variety: Unoaked Moscato
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price:
Wine Critic/Review: Ripe pear, pineapple & creme brulee with a lightly creamy texture, lemon curd and vanilla pudding. Well balanced with a medium finish that has just enough acidity, although a touch on the fruit forward finish. (Tastings.com)
Personal Review: I realize how much my palate has changed since taking this class. I agree with Professor Boyer and my classmates- wines like Simply Naked really taste like Kool-Aid. I'm not a particular fan of the lemon notes but the pineapple scent was pleasing. This wine is best drank extra cold and does not have a long shelf life. Drink now or forever hold your peace.
Ate with: goat cheese and water crackers

 Name: Tapena
 Variety: Garnacha
Region: La Tierra de Castilla
Country: Spain
 Year: Vintage 2010
Price: <=$15
Shop/wine critic/winery review: This wine is as flamboyant as a red polka dot dress. Garnet colored, its lush and sultry. Bright aromas and flabors of fresh blackberries and cherries fill the glass. The finish is velvety with whispers of pepper and exotic Spanish spice. Tapena dances best with pork tenderloins, grilled rib-eye, and roast chicken. (back of the bottle)
Wine Review II: Tapeña Wines, produced by the Ferrer family in Spain, are fresh and fruit-forward. Made to pair well with tapas (small plates), Tapeña wines feature a distinctive fork on the label.  100% Garnacha (Grenache). Medium ruby red in color. Aromatic with black cherry and a touch of barnyard on the nose. Fruit-forward with cherry, licorice, and earth on the palate. Medium to full-bodied with lively acidity, medium tannins, and a long finish. (Wine Peeps
Personal Review:  Soft tannins and yummy cherry and licorice scents.Mellow peppery and slightly earthy first and finishing tastes. I love this wine! Probably one of my favorites so far. Smooth finish- seriously.
No food.

Wine Tasting Week of 1.28

Name: Acronym
Variety: "Red Wine Blend"
Region:California
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price:
Wine Critic/Review: Acronym is a dark ruby red blend of several varietals dominated by Pinot Noir and Syrah. Dense aromas of red berry fruit combine nicely with hints of roasted coffee, soft vanilla, and milk chocolate. The fruit follows through to the palate with dark berry jam flavors and a touch of cedar spice. The delightfully lush mid-palate segues beautifully into a long, lingering finish.(Acronym Wine)
Wine Critic/Review II: This is a small, pinched blend made from Pinot Noir, Syrah and other varieties. It has flavors of herb, vegetable, sweet wood and sour cherry candy. ( from Wine Enthusiast)
Personal Review: Blend of grape varietals, coffee and red berry fruit taste. Some softer vanilla flavors and earthy wood taste (cedar?)
Ate with: goat cheese and water crackers

Name:Don Manuel Torrontes
 Variety: Torrontes
Region:Mendoza
Country: Argentina
 Year: 2009
Price:$13.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: A really good and clean white wine with all the tropicality and zest that is Argentine variety can give. The nose is crystalline and pure, with white flower scents of jasmine and citrus blossom, while the palate is round, melony, and full of lychee and papaya. Smooth on the finish. Drink soon. (Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg VA).
Personal Review: Very floral scent with notes of citrus and lime. Much more viscous wine than expected. I agree with the review that it has a smooth finish. I can't taste the lychee and papaya mostly because I forget what those fruits taste like. Hoping to run to the grocery store and pick up some fruits and veggies that I haven't eaten in a while in order to expand my tasting vocabulary.

 Name:Wild Hog Barbera
 Variety: Barbera
Region: California Country: USA
 Year: 2007
Price: ~$22.95 Shop/wine critic/winery review: Notes of ripe dark fruit on the nose, with a hint of earth. The palate is greeted with a combination of dark fruits including blackberry, dark plum, olallie berries and sour cherry. Bright acidity and ripe fruit, hints to what this wine will become with some age. Great now with a little breathing.(Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg VA) Personal Review: I can taste the grape and grape skin- very deep colorful flavor. I can also taste the cherry element- almost like dried fruit. Interesting balance between the tannins and dryness.. Wine tasting only; no food.

Name:Chocolate Box GSM
 Variety: Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre
Region: Barossa
Country: Australia
 Year: 2009
Price: ~$18.95
Shop/wine critic/winery review: This retro bad boy blend is from the Rocland Estate Winery in Barossa, where they do everything a little bit different. A blend with deep russet red, with earthy aromas of savoury oak and dark cherries with a little stewed rhubarb. Spice and cinnamon on the palate over a robust and generous body. (Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg VA) Personal Review: Full mouth feel and dry finish. I'm picking up on a rhubarb taste. and definitely like the deep red color. Looks and tastes like a fairly good drinking wine. Would probably be better decanted for a day or two. A little spice but not too overwelming. The name had me expecting something entirely different... something chocolately. This wine would probably pair well with a lightly sweetened dark chocolate.Tasting only; no food.

Name: Dom de la Quilla Muscadet
 Variety: Melon
Region: Loire Valley
Country: Product of France
 Year: 2009
Price: ~$10
Shop/wine critic/winery review: The variety has naturally high acidity, but can struggle to achieve good concentration of flavors. The best wines show apple and citrus flavors, with mineral characteristics. A saltiness can sometimes identified, suggestive of the region’s maritime history.(Source)
Personal Review: Sweet smell and almost tangy taste. Dry and fragrant wine. Light and not too fruity. Suggested as an oyster wine but I'd probably pair it with lighter grilled meal (or something with a crisp char). The aftertaste was anything but dry which was very pleasant.Wine tasting only; no food.
